How to Make a Native Bee House
Materials for Making a Mason Jar Bee House with Shade
1 Container: 6-8” Deep for keeping the nest dry (mason jar, tall can with one end removed, bottom of juice or milk carton, etc.)
7-50, 6” long nesting tubes (dried hollow stems, paper straws, bamboo, or paper rolled around a pencil. Different diameter openings will attract different species of native bees, 1/16” to 1/2”)
Clay to hold tubes in container, about 100g or 1 to 1.5” diameter ball
Jute-coated wire (or any other wire)
Beeswax wrap for decoration/shade (optional)
8” by 12” Piece of Cardboard creased/folded in half for shade roof. Cut a hole for wire hanger (or craft a shade roof from metal or lightweight wood) (optional)
Materials For Making a Simple Bee House “Wrap”
7-15, Dried Hollow Stems cut into at least 6” Long Segments (Sunflowers, Allium, Joe Pye Weed are some good choices, but feel free to experiment…allow stalks to dry in the garden and cut in the spring. Leave 6” sticking up in your garden for even more places for bees to nest!)
Beeswax Wrap or Waterproof Cloth
Jute-coated wire (any wire or string will do)
A bit of clay or mud to close back end of tubes
